TENS should feel like a comfortable tingling sensation. Placement matters because some areas are more sensitive or inappropriate for electrical stimulation.
Areas to avoid
- The front or sides of the neck, including the carotid artery area.
- Across the chest or through the heart.
- Directly over the spine, open wounds, irritated skin, or numb skin.
- The head, face, eyes, mouth, or throat.
- Areas with active swelling, infection, or unexplained pain.
Ask a clinician first if
- You have a pacemaker, implanted electronic device, heart condition, epilepsy, or are pregnant.
- You are recovering from surgery or have a diagnosed injury.
- Your pain is new, severe, worsening, or associated with weakness or numbness.
